Financial reporting and sustainability reporting are increasingly held to similar expectations by investors and assurance providers. Yet the systems behind them often operate very differently. As sustainability disclosures become more closely linked to investment decisions, the way organizations collect and manage underlying data is becoming just as important as the disclosures themselves.
A common challenge for many organizations in the GCC is how sustainability data is collected, managed, and governed. The responsibility for capturing Environmental, Social, and Governance performance metrics is frequently delegated to a siloed corporate communications or sustainability department lacking structural authority. They are recognized as material inputs that influence enterprise value, credit ratings, and the cost of capital.
When a regional corporation publishes a sustainability report compiled through manual spreadsheets, obtaining reasonable third-party assurance over those disclosures can become significantly more difficult. Independent auditors cannot verify the provenance, integrity, or historical consistency of the data points. Executives must establish a unified data platform that automates the collection of environmental and social indicators directly from primary operational systems. Sustainability data must undergo multi-layered internal audit protocols before reaching the board of directors, ensuring that every disclosed metric is verifiable, defensible, and suitable for assurance and investor reporting.
